Mark is the founder and principle specialist at PainWest.He trained at the University of Western Australia, graduating in 1995. He initially pursued a career in General Practice, working around Perth and overseas for 5 years. He completed his training as a specialist GP and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2000.

In 2001 he moved to Launceston, Tasmania, to train as a GP Anaesthetist. This ignited an interest in anaesthesia and he subsequently returned to WA to undertake 5 years training as a Specialist Anaesthetist. He was awarded his Fellowship (FANZCA) in 2006.

During this time he encountered the speciality of Pain Medicine and this seemed to provide the perfect marriage of his skills in general practice and anaesthesia. He underwent further training at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and was his Fellowship in Pain Medicine (FFPMANZCA) in 2007. During his training he obtained the highest examination score and was awarded the Barbara Walker Prize for Excellence in Pain Medicine in 2007.

He worked as a pain medicine specialist and anaesthetist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital from 2007 to 2017. During this time he was Supervisor of Training and Head of Department at various stages. He was involved in research trials, teaching and extensive clinical practice.

Dr Schutze started PainWest in 2009 to provide pain management services to privately insured patients. This was initially a small operation at Westminster Day Surgery one day a week. Mark moved to the Hills in 2010 and it became evident that there was a lack of pain specialists in this region. The practice grew and he eventually decided to leave SCGH and concentrate on PainWest. He also took up a consultant anesthetist position at St John of God Hospital, Midland.

He now works 4 days a week at PainWest. He only consults at the Midland rooms. He does procedures at SJOG Midland on Wednesdays and Westminster Day Surgery on Fridays.

He continues to advance his knowledge and skills by regularly attending national and international conferences. He frequently attends hands on workshops to ensure that he uses the latest, most advanced procedural interventions available. He provides teaching to students, nurses, GPs and Specialists.

He loves spending time with his family on their semi-rural property in the Hills. Horses, sheep, chickens and bees occupy the weekends. He enjoys hiking and cycling as well.
